Federal holiday, check. But still encourage your employees to volunteer, check. Coordinate a massive workday in Heʻeia with three community-based non-profits, check. Hookup with Chef Mark Noguchi and Moumen El Hajji to serve hundreds of locally-sourced and inspired lunches, check. Coordinate event logistics, parking, transportation, water, snacks, first aid, tents, tables, chairs, check. Have it all go off without a hitch, check. And finally….have 700+ volunteers spend 3 hours in the ahupuaʻa of Heʻeia doing various service learning projects, PRICELESS. What a way to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
That just about sums it up. The day to remember Martin Luther King Jr. was on Jan. 20th this year and HPMG (most of us know them as Kaiser Permanente) committed their massive army of employees, doctors, nurses, admins, and their families to a day of volunteering in Heʻeia. This is their 2nd year to do it and it was a resounding success again.
Enjoy the gallery of pictures below as well as some of these links with more pictures and news stories of their day of service. Mahalo to the entire HPMG crew and especially Erin Closmore, Julie Keliʻihoʻomalu, and Azure Lwin-Maluo who were the team that made it all happen here at the pond!
