Nenue Wanted!
Aloha family, friends, and fishers!
Paepae o Heʻeia is currently in the hunt for 45 live and healthy juvenile nenue to run a six-month experiment. We are looking to see if they will eat some of the common invasive limu that we have in Kāneʻohe Bay – Gracilaria salicornia, Acantophera spicifera, and Kappaphycus spp. A critical piece to this whole experiment is that we need the LOW FIN nenue. Yes, there are about 5 different species of nenue swimming around in our waters and we want a specific one. The scientific name is Kyphosus vaigiensis but it is known as the Lowfin Chub. Here are more details about the fish we are looking for:
- Must be Lowfin chub as identified by the pictures above
- No bigger than 16 inches but juveniles (hand sized) are prefferred
- Must be alive and in good condition
- Must be delivered to Heʻeia Fishpond (contact us at 808-236-6178 to arrange for delivery …. donʻt just show up with fish)
- We will pay $15 cash for your time and effort to catch, handle, and transport the fish to our fishpond

We see them occasionally in the waters near our fishpond but mostly during the summer months which has made it challenging to get our project started.
